When is the best time for mountain biking in Lake Garda?

The short answer: **April to mid-June and September to early November** are the two best windows for mountain biking around Lake Garda. July and August work too, but you'll need to start early and pick your routes carefully because of the heat.
I've been guiding here for years, so this is what I actually tell guests when they email me asking when to come. No tourism-board fluff.
Month by month
March — early season, lower trails only
Lake-level trails (Monte Brione, Ponale, Bagattoli, Cavedine) are usually dry and rideable. Anything above 1000 m — Tremalzo, Carone, Larici north faces — can still hold snow or be muddy. Temperatures: 8–16°C. Good for fit riders who don't mind layering.
April — the season opens
My favourite month for technical riding. Trails are tacky, the lake is bright blue, wildflowers everywhere. Most classic routes (San Giovanni, Pregasina, Punta Larici) are in. High alpine tours like Monte Carone usually open mid-to-late April depending on the winter.
May — peak conditions, manageable crowds
Everything is open. Temperatures 15–22°C, long daylight, trails are dry but not dusty yet. If I had to pick one month for a first Garda trip, it's May.
June — green, warm, busy
Excellent until about the 20th. After that it gets hot at lake level (28–32°C) and busy with European holiday traffic. Switch to early starts (8:00 departure) and higher routes — Tremalzo, Carone, Malga Grassi.
July & August — heat strategy required
Lake-level riding before 10:00 or after 17:00 only. Otherwise go high: 1500–1800 m tours stay 10°C cooler than Riva. Thunderstorms build most afternoons — be off exposed ridges by 14:00. It's still a great time to ride here, you just plan around the sun.
September — second peak season
Often the best month of the year. Water still warm enough to swim, temperatures back to 18–24°C, light goes golden, summer crowds gone. Trails can be dusty after a dry August but they ride fast.
October — colours and quiet
Larch and beech turn yellow. Most days are 12–20°C and sunny. Some high tours start closing late October when the first snow hits Tremalzo. This is when I personally ride the most.
November — closing the season
First half is often still rideable at lake level. After mid-November, days get short and wet. Brione and Ponale still work for shorter rides.
December–February — off-season
Lake-level trails ride on dry days but the season is effectively closed. I'm not guiding in winter — too much weather risk and too little daylight.
What about the wind?
Lake Garda has two reliable winds: **Pelèr** in the morning (north to south) and **Ora** in the afternoon (south to north). They don't really affect MTB unless you're on exposed ridges like Carone or Tremalzo. If anything, the Ora cools you down on hot afternoons.
Crowds, in plain numbers
- **Quietest months for MTB**: March, April, October, early November
- **Busiest**: late June through August (mostly road cyclists, families, and lake tourists — singletrack stays relatively quiet even in peak)
- **Sweet spot for value**: May and September
So when should *you* come?
If you want the best conditions and you're flexible: **mid-May or mid-September**. If you want fewer people and don't mind cooler weather: **April or October**. If you're locked into a summer holiday: come, but ride high and ride early.
Either way — message me on WhatsApp (+39 388 571 8535) a few weeks before your trip and I'll tell you exactly which trails are in shape that week.
