The feeling of Altissimo Tour · Panorama Loop

A legendary panoramic climb high above Lake Garda

About the Altissimo Tour · Panorama Loop tour

A quiet panoramic road climbs almost 1,700 m above the lake, with Garda views opening wider at every bend.

Then a flowing descent through alpine pastures, a mountain rifugio, and old villages on the way back down.

One honest note: despite the name, the summit of Monte Altissimo has no rideable access — even the official route never reaches it. The highest point is Sella di Monte Varagna (1,712 m), and that's exactly where we ride. The views from the saddle are everything the name promises.

The climb from Torbole follows a paved panoramic road with almost no traffic, then a forest road; the final stretch to the saddle is steep gravel that rewards good technique. From the top, an MTB trail drops to Rifugio Malga Campei (1,470 m), a hut on a natural terrace facing Vallagarina and the Dolomites — we stop for lunch when it's open. From there the route stays flexible: trails or a panoramic road toward Festa di Brentonico, then Castione, Sano and Loppio back to Torbole. If the weather turns, a fast, safe road descent gets you home dry.

Why this ride is special — Altissimo Tour · Panorama Loop

This is the official Garda Trentino route 765 "Altissimo Tour" — one of the classic full-day rides above the lake.

The climb passes through what was the front line of World War I: trenches and positions from 1915–18 still remain just off the road near Malga Zures and Doss Casina, a short stop away if you're curious.

And at Sella di Monte Varagna the routes literally part ways — a hiking path continues toward the Altissimo summit, while the bike route begins its long descent through the pastures of Monte Baldo.

Who this ride is for

For experienced riders who want a serious climb — real elevation even on an e-bike, and basic trail skills for parts of the descent.

What to bring

Frequently asked about Altissimo Tour · Panorama Loop

Do we actually reach the summit of Monte Altissimo?
No. The summit of Monte Altissimo has no rideable access — even the official Garda Trentino route 765 doesn't reach it. The highest point on our ride is Sella di Monte Varagna at 1712 m, the same saddle where the official route peaks. The views from there are exactly what the name promises.
Is an e-bike required for this tour?
Strongly recommended. About 1800 m of climbing is a serious effort even with pedal assist. Riders with strong endurance can do it on a regular MTB, but the day becomes considerably harder — an e-bike lets you enjoy the panoramas instead of just surviving the climb.
Where can we refill water on the route?
There's no reliable water point on the mountain. Rifugio Malga Campei is the only option when it's open, but the opening schedule is unpredictable. Bring at least 2 litres per person — bottles can only be refilled reliably back down in the villages on the return leg.
